A primary-school student was driven to quit school after his parents had had enough of the ear-deafening noise caused by 14 flights an hour arriving at and departing from Suvarnabhumi Airport, affecting the boy's health and concentration.

The father of Natthanon Veeraphitkasem, a Prathom-2 student at Sathit Bang Na School in Samut Prakan's Bang Phli district, submitted a resignation letter to the school headmistress last month, saying, "The noise of the aircraft is unbearably loud."

"We predict more students will leave the school by the end of the year, as some parents are now considering the move," said Nadrudee Chitrangsan, an assistant to the school headmistress.

Sathit Bang Na is located near Suvarnabhumi Airport, and the 1,086 students, including kindergarten and primary- and secondary-school students, are being driven to distraction, because none of the 54 classrooms are soundproof.

"The school environment has been designed as a 'resort school' in which the classrooms are in a natural environment, so none of them has air-conditioners, either," she said.

MILFORD -- General Motors Corp. will employ an arsenal of soundproofing technology in hopes of making its upcoming Buick Enclave crossover one of the quietest rides on the road.

Buick officials said Thursday that the brand will face off with the likes of Lexus and Mercedes-Benz when the five-door luxury crossover debuts next year as a 2008 model. The Enclave will be built at GM's new $1 billion plant in Delta Township near Lansing.

GM hopes a sleek exterior, laminated steel and perforated leather seats that absorb sound will quiet critics and sell the Enclave to a younger, more affluent crowd. The features are the latest incarnation of Buick's QuietTuning technology, used in such models as the Lucerne and LaCrosse sedans.

"This technology is very powerful and very simple," Buick general manager Steve Shannon said Thursday at the GM Proving Grounds, where the Enclave underwent sound testing in high-tech wind tunnels and on low-tech bumpy roads. "This is basically a luxury car that just happens to seat seven or eight people."

A quiet ride is not a perk, but an expectation in the luxury market, and it's an area where Buick has fallen short in the past, said Brian Moody, road test editor for Edmunds.com. "People who are purchasing luxury vehicles expect a certain serenity or quietness with a vehicle," Moody said. "If they don't get that, it seems cheap."

Living In Florence: Noisy Neighbors are Normal

It seems like Sunday is the day when I hear my neighbors the most. Our windows are open because the weather is still nice, but at 9AM I heard the elderly man downstairs whistling at the pigeons and another girl, probably one of the new tenants downstairs, singing along with the radio.

During the week, we hear the elderly man yelling at the younger woman who lives with him in the apartment underneath ours. Doors slam and windows bang shut quite often in the middle of the afternoon. There is a small child that lives above us in the building next door to us who cries almost every night at 11PM.

And, now our new neighbors downstairs come home late at night, around 1AM, and talk outside in rather loud voices as if it were the middle of the afternoon. They also have a German Shepherd that barks sometimes and usually never before midnight.

We had one neighbor woman the first year that we were living in this building who would scream at the top of her lungs twice a day. It got so bad that if anyone wanted to come by our apartment, I would make sure it was during a time when she wouldn't be screaming.

I found out that I'm not the only one with noisy neighbors. It's quite typical here in Florence, if not in most of Italy. One of my friends, Sara, said that an elderly woman who lives next door to her yells a lot as well for hours on end. Luckily, she's not home much, but still the elderly woman isn't going anywhere.

There are obvious virtues to sensory deprivation in a city that kills you one unwanted input at a time, while bombarding your eyes, ears and nose in every direction at once.

Once mainstream enough to spawn a major Hollywood film, and life-changing enough to turn a Village Voice reporter into a guru dedicated to “Exploring the Private Sea” of the mind, sensory deprivation tanks—aka floatation tanks, aka isolation chambers—are very nearly extinct in New York City.

Sam Zeiger’s Blue Light Floatation Co., established in 1985, has ridden the whole waxing-and-then-waning wave, and today remains the last dedicated outlet in a formerly crowded local market. Ear-itated Bay Ridge residents are struggling to name that tone - a round-the-clock humming noise they say is depriving them of sleep.

The noise - compared to the roar of an engine and the honk of a fog horn - has been blowing in from near the Bay Ridge Channel for nearly a year, but nobody has been able to pinpoint its source.

"The problem is it's constant, 24 hours a day," said Dr. Concetta Butera, a chiropractor who lives on Colonial Road. "It's messed up my life really badly."

For Butera, who has lived in her sixth-floor apartment for 18 years, the sound is more than just a nuisance. Besides spending the night at her office, she has sunk more than $2,000 into muffling the noise.

Late last year, Butera installed soundproof windows, invested in a sound machine and even hired an acoustical consultant, who failed to determine where the sound was coming from but suggested a fan outside her building.

Rita Majurinen, a music teacher who lives several blocks away on Wakeman Place, said the sound reaches her home, too.

"It's such a low tone that I can feel it in my body," said Majurinen, adding the noise has kept her awake at night.

An Easy Way To Fix Squeaky Floors From the Top

I dislike squeaky floors, especially since I live underneath one. You can fix them from the top and through carpet.

"Floors and stairs only squeak when you're doing something sneaky, like coming back to bed after an ice cream binge at 4:00 a.m. But you don't have to get caught. Let me share my espionage tactics.

If you've got plank floors, memorize which boards squeak and step deftly over them. I use the word 'deftly' with authority, since my stairs have four squeaky steps in succession, meaning I have to haul myself over this thigh-killing span using only the feeble banister for support.

If you have carpet laid over floorboards, you can't just count planks and avoid the noisy ones. No, you need landmarks that help you pilot safely around squeaks hidden under monochromatic broadloom. I personally navigate using a cluster of cat-barf stains that looks just like Orion's Belt, as well as an explosive-looking discolouration where I once dropped a whole pot of cheese fondue."

In December 1956, after besting Herbert Stempel, Van Doren would walk off with $129,000 in prize money, a Time magazine cover story and a regular gig on NBC's "Today" show. His 15 minutes of frame would abruptly end, however, when a disgruntled Stemple ratted him out to various investigating bodies from the New York grand jury to the U.S. House of Representatives. In TV Land, it would appear; rigged results and coached contestants came standard. Congress would subsequently make quiz show-fixing a federal crime.

Soundproofing Your Ceiling Part II: Reduce Footfall / Impact Noise & Airborne Noise

Part II of Soundproofing your ceiling. First, some information on structure noise from the Specifications Construction Institute, Noisy Neighbors, and the Institute for Research in Construction.

1. Use Resilient Channel and MLV (Mass Loaded Vinyl). This usually requires that you have open studs. So if you already have an existing ceiling in place this may not be your best choice. More information on this type of soundproofing can be found at the following websites: SuperSoundProofing Company, and Soundproofing America.

2. 2. Your going use Sound Clips/Isolation Mounts and in most cases they will connect to flurring channels. There are several of these types of clips on the market: Aero-Support, Super Sound Clip, and Springers and Hangers. More information on this subject can be found here: SoundProofing America, and SoundClips Vs. Resilient Channels.

3. Soundproofing an existing ceiling with mass loaded vinyl. You will want to attach
flurring strips to the existing ceiling and attach the MLV to the strips as outlined here: Mass Loaded Vinyl Installation.

4. Soundproofing an existing ceiling with mass loaded vinyl backed with foam. More info on this procedure can be found here: Decoupled Mass Loaded Vinyl for walls and ceilings.

6. You can also increase the effectiveness of any above methods by replacing the sheetrock with an engineered pre-dampened sheetrock prouduct. You could either use QuietRock or Supress.

7. The most interesting and promising method of soundproofing your ceiling is using The Green Glue Company's Green Glue. This product is a viscoelastic dampening material, basically it can convert noise and vibration to heat. See my other posts about Green Glue and download the Pratt School of Engineering's paper of QuietRock vs Mass Loaded Vinyl. QuietRock also incorporates an viscoleastic dampening material. Mark Parsons, a musician from Pismo Beach has written a do-it-yourself soundprooding guide.

For the past three decades Mark Huntley Parsons has been seeking a musical balance: On the one hand, he wants to pound on his drums. At the same time, he doesn’t want to drive everyone else crazy.

"Being a musician is a noisy hobby," he said, "and most musicians don’t live by themselves."

Through trial and error and by asking the experts, Parsons has nearly perfected the balance, becoming an expert himself on building studio-quality music rooms.

Now the freelance writer and Pacific Gas and Electric Co. trainer is sharing his tips in "Keep the Peace! The Musician’s Guide to Soundproofing" ($13, Modern Drummer), a how-to book targeted toward drummers but also applicable to other loud musicians."

A Struggle for Friendly Skies: Noise Complaints Continue

NASHUA -- Pilot Rob Holland zig-zags his small biplane toward the airstrip. He's hardly an amateur, but moving the craft from side to side is normal, since the type of plane he's steering doesn't allow him to see what's directly in front of him.

The roaring engine rumbles through the floor and fills the cockpit. Holland smiles. Within minutes, he catapults into the air, a patchwork of earth shrinking below. He climbs to 3,000 feet.

"They say the sky is the limit," Holland quips through his headset. "But really, it's just the beginning."

What happens next can induce a rapid heart beat, sweaty palms, rubbery legs and the need for, well, a barf bag.

Nothing is visible through the Plexiglas canopy overhead except blue sky. Peering from left to right, the earth seems to pull back like a green and brown curtain. Spins. Loops. Rolls. Hammerheads. Screaming through the sky, Holland spirals vertically toward the earth. From the ground, it might appear like the plane's about to crash. But Holland is in total control. Before you can blink, he's rearing up and flying gracefully toward the clouds."

"Our tests revealed that viscoelastic paneling is an equal if not better solution than. mass loading to soundproofing". Dowload this MS Word Document, it is a study by Pratt School of Engineering at Duke University. It looks at different construction techniques for soundproofing. It compares the use of mass to block sound to the use of viscoelastic damping material (QuietRock Panel QuietSolution). Interesting read, viscoelastic material proves to be slightly better than mass. Tips on Soundproofing Your Condo Ceiling Part 1 UPDATED

The first thing you want to do is talk to your neigbors, here is an excellent article on the subject Noisy Nuisances: What are Your Rights? and another Nolo Law Noise FAQ. To sum this article up talk to your neighbor, write a letter to your neighbor, ask for mediation, call the police and finally sue your neighbor. You would probably like to avoid the last two solutions. However, if you would like some information on sueing your neighbor, you can read these articles Hardwood Floors Incite Real Estate Riot, and Westcon.

I found it helpful to keep a noise diary of all the noise my neighbor made. I also bought a sound meter of eBay so I could measure the amount of noise they were making, this may be a little extreme. However, I wanted to make sure I was not being overly sensitive.

If your past the love thy neighbor stage you can try a white noise generator or sound conditioner. In my bedroom, I use an air cleaner, it makes plenty of white noise. I learned this trick while attending college, where I bought myself a big window fan and it drowned out everthing including the fire alarm (bad).

If you can, try to tackle the noise from above. Offer your neigbor to help pay for new flooring. Of course you will want to lay down some type engineered prouduct(s)to absorb impact noise and block airborne noise. You could try Impact Acoustical Floor Treatments, Ekasonic, Subfloor Plus Foam, Impact Line, Kinetics Sound Rated Floor System, QuietWood, QuietFoam , or Green Glue. The above products are part of a system, so read the fine print, other materials may need to be used to achieve good results. But before you start laying down underlayment, be sure to read this information from SoundProofing America Soundproofing Wood and Tile Floors, flooring information from Super Soundproofing and Dealing With Impact Noise. Also, do not forget high quality thick carpet padding. Stay tuned for Part II.
